Tasty Tom’s New Campaign Sharpens Its Market Ambition
Tasty Tom is taking a fresh approach to the highly competitive Nigerian tomato paste market with its new campaign, “Fries Well, Blends Well,” built around a simple but powerful consumer insight: effective brand storytelling begins with understanding a real problem in the kitchen.
The new campaign seeks to give Tasty Tom a more distinctive role in consumers’ everyday cooking experiences, moving beyond conventional product advertising to demonstrate how the brand responds to a familiar kitchen need.
At the heart of the campaign is the proposition “Fries Well, Blends Well,” a message designed to highlight the versatility of Tasty Tom while connecting the product with two common preparation methods in Nigerian kitchens.
The campaign reflects a deliberate effort by the brand to build its communication around consumer behaviour rather than starting with a creative idea in isolation.
Apurv Pandey, Marketing Head and Vice President, Business Unit, Olam, which owns Tasty Tom, explained the thinking behind the campaign in a LinkedIn post.
“A compelling narrative doesn’t start with a creative idea, but a genuine consumer problem behind it,” Pandey said.
According to him, the team identified “a simple yet highly relevant pain point in the kitchen,” which became the starting point for the campaign.
What followed, he said, was a process of deep consumer understanding, supported by a team determined to get both the idea and its creative expression right.
The result is a campaign that seeks to do more than communicate a functional product benefit. It is designed to give Tasty Tom a clearer and more distinctive position within Nigeria’s tomato paste category.
The significance of the strategy lies in the nature of the Nigerian tomato paste market itself. Tomato paste is deeply embedded in everyday cooking, with consumers using the product across a wide range of meals and preparation styles. This familiarity creates both an opportunity and a challenge for brands: while the category enjoys strong household relevance, competing brands must find increasingly compelling ways to differentiate themselves.
For Tasty Tom, “Fries Well, Blends Well” provides a platform to communicate that differentiation through everyday cooking behaviour.
Rather than positioning tomato paste simply as an ingredient, the campaign connects the product to how consumers actually prepare food, using familiar kitchen experiences to strengthen the brand’s relevance.
Pandey said the outcome was a campaign that “does more than communicate a product benefit,” adding that it has given Tasty Tom “a distinctive role in the category.”
That ambition is particularly important in a market where brands compete not only on taste, quality and availability, but increasingly on their ability to establish an emotional and functional connection with consumers.
The new campaign therefore represents a strategic attempt by Tasty Tom to strengthen its place in the minds of Nigerian consumers by owning a simple, relatable and memorable cooking proposition.
By anchoring its communication on “Fries Well, Blends Well,” Tasty Tom is turning an everyday kitchen experience into a brand platform, one that seeks to demonstrate versatility while making the product benefit immediately relevant to consumers.
Ultimately, the campaign illustrates how consumer insight can become the foundation for both creative expression and competitive positioning. In Nigeria’s crowded tomato paste market, Tasty Tom is betting that understanding what consumers do in the kitchen and reflecting that behaviour in a memorable brand message can help sharpen its competitive edge.
