FirstBank Appoints Olayinka Thomas Ijabiyi as Group Head, Marketing and Corporate Communications

FirstBank of Nigeria Limited has confirmed the appointment of Olayinka Thomas Ijabiyi as its substantive Group Head, Marketing and Corporate Communications, a decision that takes immediate effect and signals renewed emphasis on governance and strategic leadership amid the bank’s ongoing transformation.

The appointment formally elevates Ijabiyi from his acting role, which he assumed in December 2024, to the substantive position. It reflects continuity in leadership while reinforcing FirstBank’s intent to strengthen its brand, reputation management, and corporate communications architecture across its operations.

Ijabiyi brings more than 25 years of professional experience across marketing and corporate communications, with a career spanning financial services, telecommunications, media, and international development. Since joining FirstBank in 2011, he has occupied several senior roles within the Marketing and Corporate Communications function, including Head of Brand Strategy and Special Projects, Head of Digital Marketing, and Head of Brand and Stakeholder Management.

In his expanded role, he is responsible for shaping and executing integrated marketing and communications strategies across the FirstBank Group’s markets. His portfolio covers brand and reputation management, executive positioning, Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability, and broader strategic communications aligned with the bank’s long-term business objectives.

Before his tenure at FirstBank, Ijabiyi built a career across leading institutions including the British Council, MultiChoice, MTN, and Etisalat Nigeria, where he contributed significantly to brand building, corporate communications, and digital transformation initiatives.

He is widely recognised for his strategic leadership and ability to translate business priorities into impactful communication strategies. Over the years, he has led major initiatives including milestone anniversary campaigns and brand refresh programmes, while delivering efficiency gains and strengthening brand equity.

Academically, Ijabiyi holds a Master’s degree in Public and International Affairs from the University of Lagos and a Bachelor’s degree in English Language from the former Ondo State University, Ado Ekiti. He is a Fellow of the National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria and a member of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, among other professional affiliations.

FirstBank, often described as West Africa’s leading financial institution and a key driver of financial inclusion, said the appointment strengthens its commitment to innovation, disciplined communication, and sustained brand leadership across its markets.
