Diageo Appoints John Musunga as Managing Director for Africa

As Africa continues to emerge as one of the world's most promising consumer markets, global beverage giant Diageo has strengthened its leadership on the continent with the appointment of seasoned executive John Musunga as Managing Director for Africa.

The appointment, which took effect on July 1, 2026, places Musunga at the forefront of Diageo's expansion strategy across Africa, where he will oversee operations spanning more than 30 markets and drive the company's ambition to deepen consumer engagement, accelerate innovation and deliver sustainable growth.

His elevation comes at a pivotal time for Diageo as multinational consumer goods companies intensify investments across Africa, attracted by the continent's expanding middle class, youthful population and rising demand for premium brands.

Musunga succeeds to the continental role after serving as Managing Director for Diageo's South, West and Central Africa business, where he led one of the company's largest regional portfolios. His leadership covered a diverse mix of markets and businesses, providing him with extensive operational experience across the continent.

Prior to that, he served as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Guinness Nigeria, where he led the brewer through a period of business transformation, strengthening commercial performance and positioning the company for long-term growth in one of Africa's largest consumer markets.

In announcing the appointment, Diageo described Musunga as a transformational business leader with more than 25 years of international experience across Africa, Europe and Asia and a proven record of delivering growth, leading organisational change and building high-performing teams.

His career with Diageo began in 2021 when he was appointed Managing Director of Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL). At the time, the business was emerging from the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and Musunga was credited with restoring commercial momentum, strengthening market performance and laying the foundation for broader regional leadership responsibilities.

Before joining Diageo, he spent several years at GSK, where he held senior commercial leadership roles across Africa, Europe and Asia. His experience included leading large-scale commercial operations and collaborating with international health organisations on public health initiatives, broadening his expertise beyond the fast-moving consumer goods sector.

As Managing Director for Africa, Musunga will relocate from London to Nairobi, from where he will oversee Diageo's continental operations.

The decision to base the role in Kenya reflects the company's confidence in Nairobi's growing importance as a regional commercial and financial hub, while reinforcing its strategic position as the nerve centre for Diageo's African business.

Beyond commercial growth, Musunga is expected to champion Diageo's broader ambition of creating lasting economic and social value across its markets through responsible business practices, talent development and stronger partnerships with customers, distributors and local communities.

Known for his people-centred leadership style, Musunga has consistently advocated for inclusive leadership and the development of diverse, high-performing teams, qualities Diageo believes will be instrumental in navigating the next phase of its African growth journey.

His appointment underscores the increasing importance of Africa within Diageo's global portfolio and reflects the company's long-term confidence in the continent's economic potential. It also highlights a growing trend among multinational corporations to entrust experienced leaders with deep regional expertise to unlock new growth opportunities across Africa's rapidly evolving consumer landscape.
