ARCON Launches Special Recognition Awards to Celebrate Excellence and Industry Contribution

The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has unveiled the ARCON Special Recognition Awards (ASRA), an initiative designed to recognise individuals and organisations whose contributions have significantly advanced Nigeria's marketing communications industry.

The awards initiative was announced today at a press conference held at Leola Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, bringing together key stakeholders and leaders from across Nigeria's advertising and marketing communications ecosystem.

Speaking on the importance of the awards, the Director-General of ARCON, Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo, said recognition is essential to encouraging excellence and promoting positive contributions across the industry.

According to him, the initial concept was focused primarily on compliance, particularly in the area of advertisement vetting, which remains one of the most critical elements of ARCON's regulatory oversight.

“Awards are extremely important because we need to continuously recognise people who have done well in different areas. The initial plan was to introduce Compliance Awards, particularly around vetting, which is one of the most critical elements of our regulatory oversight. We believe that recognising organisations and practitioners who comply will encourage others within the system to do the same,” Fadolapo explained.

However, he noted that following consultations and a broader assessment of the advertising ecosystem, ARCON expanded the scope of the awards beyond compliance.

“Looking at the advertising ecosystem, there is so much happening, and simply recognising compliance in the vetting process would not be enough. The committee suggested that we should also recognise other areas of relevance, including individuals and organisations that have contributed significantly to the growth and development of the ecosystem,” he said.

Fadolapo also emphasised the need to change the perception of ARCON as a regulator primarily associated with sanctions and violations.

“ARCON has, in the past, been more associated with sanctions to the extent that when people receive a letter from us, the first thing that comes to mind is that they have violated a regulation. We need to change that narrative.

“As a regulator, we are not regulating to strangulate the industry. We are regulating to develop and grow the industry.”

Also speaking at the press conference, the Head of Group Media Management at Tolaram, Mr. Adeola Amosun expressed the company's commitment to supporting initiatives that promote professionalism, integrity and excellence within the marketing communications industry.

“It is a pleasure to represent Tolaram in supporting an enormous event like this. At Tolaram, we believe that the growth of the industry is not driven only by great brands and great ideas. It is also driven by professionalism, integrity, excellence and a commitment to doing things the right way.

“These are the values that make our industry sustainable and deserving of the trust of the consumers we serve. This is why we are proud to be a Platinum Sponsor of an event like this, which celebrates individuals and organisations whose contributions continue to raise the standards of the marketing communications industry.”

Chairman of the Planning Committee for the ARCON Special Recognition Awards, Mr. Yinka Adebayo, described the initiative as an important intervention aimed at rewarding excellence and creating a more balanced approach to regulation.

According to him, regulators are often associated primarily with sanctions and punishment, but recognition should also form an important part of the regulatory process.

“The awards are designed to ensure that people are rewarded for work well done. ARCON needs to be commended for this initiative. Often, regulators are known for issuing sanctions, but should they only be known for punishment?

“A regulator should also be known for recognising excellence. The whole essence of regulation is not to strangulate the industry. ARCON is now asking: how can we extend the hand of friendship? If you do well, you get rewarded.

“This is a way of inspiring others and encouraging best practices. It is also an important part of developing the industry.”

The ARCON Special Recognition Awards will feature four major categories: Advertising Compliance Awards, Public Sector Recognition Awards, Private Sector Recognition Awards and Individual Recognition Awards.

Under the Individual Recognition category, the Sectoral Frontrunner Awards will recognise individuals who pioneered and made significant contributions to the growth and development of specific sectors within the marketing communications industry. Nominees will be expected to provide evidence of their service and verifiable contributions to their respective sectors.

The Industry Lifetime Contribution Awards will recognise individuals who have demonstrated exceptional and sustained commitment to the growth, regulation, professionalism and development of Nigeria's marketing communications industry, with impactful footprints across multiple sectors.

Similarly, the Distinguished Service Recognition Awards will honour individuals who have rendered exceptional and sustained service towards the advancement, regulation and professional development of the marketing communications ecosystem.

The unveiling also received strong backing from heads of the various sectoral groups within the industry, who were present to lend their support to the initiative. Leading the delegation was the Chairman of the Heads of Sectoral Groups and President of the Association of Advertising Agencies of Nigeria (AAAN), Mr. Lanre Adisa. Also present were the President of the Experiential Marketers Association of Nigeria (EXMAN), Mrs. Tolulope Medebem; the President of the Media Independent Practitioners Association of Nigeria (MIPAN), Mrs. Brenda Nwagwu; and Mr. Babs Fagade, who represented the President of the Outdoor Advertising Association of Nigeria (OAAN).

The industry leaders expressed solidarity with ARCON over the new initiative, noting that recognising excellence, professionalism and outstanding contributions across the ecosystem would further inspire stakeholders and contribute to the sustainable growth and development of the marketing communications industry.

The awards process will commence with nominations from Monday, August 31 to Sunday, September 13, 2026. This will be followed by the submission of evidence from Monday, September 14 to Saturday, September 19. Voting is scheduled to take place from Sunday, September 20 to Sunday, September 27, while the jury will sit and select the winners between Monday, September 28 and Friday, October 2, 2026.

The ARCON Special Recognition Awards represent a significant evolution in the Council's approach to industry regulation, combining compliance enforcement with recognition and encouragement.
