Mouka Leads by the Experience We Deliver — Dimeji Osingunwa Speaks on Sustained Brand Leadership

Chief Commercial Officer, Chief Dimeji Osingunwa shares more in this interview.

Mouka operates in a highly competitive and increasingly commoditised foam and bedding industry. What key market shifts have influenced your commercial strategy in the last 3–5 years, and how is Mouka positioning itself to stay ahead?

Over the last few years, we’ve seen three major shifts:
Consumers have become far more value-conscious due to economic pressures. They want to ensure they make the best use of every kobo they part with.

The category has witnessed a growing influx of low-priced, low-quality alternatives.
Consumers are increasingly seeking differentiated, health-oriented sleep solutions. There are a lot more health-conscious people looking for ways to safeguard their well-being.

These shifts have made the industry more commoditised, but they have also pushed us to elevate our commercial strategy. At Mouka, we made a deliberate decision not to compete on price alone. Instead, we doubled down on brand equity, product quality, and consumer trust, leveraging our 66-year heritage.

We have also sharpened our portfolio segmentation, ensuring each product tier, from economy to luxury, delivers clear functional and emotional value. And with stronger trade partnerships and enhanced distribution capabilities, we have insulated the brand from the volatility of the foam category. The result is that Mouka continues to lead not just by what we sell, but by the experience we deliver to consumers.

With changing consumer preferences toward wellness-focused and ergonomic bedding solutions, how is Mouka integrating consumer insights into product innovation and portfolio expansion?

Sleep has moved from being a basic need to a wellness priority. Consumers today are asking more informed questions about orthopaedic support, body alignment, durability, and overall sleep health. For us at Mouka, this shift aligns perfectly with our longstanding commitment to superior comfort and well-being.

We have strengthened our insights capability by using market research, shopper behaviour analysis, and channel feedback to guide product innovation. This has led to the introduction of our Mouka Bio Pillow, made with groundbreaking biocrystal technology for stress-free sleep; the renovation of our Wellbeing range of orthopaedic mattresses; and many other product innovations aimed at enhancing the holistic sleep experience.

Our strategic partnership with the National Association of Orthopaedic and Manual Therapists (NAOMT) and the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy (NSP) also ensures our health-focused products meet credible standards. As a result, product development is now driven by data, science, and real consumer needs, not assumptions. And we will continue to innovate across materials, comfort technologies, and sleep solutions to meet evolving lifestyle demands.

Mouka has a strong nationwide presence. What improvements or innovations are you driving in your distribution and retail channels to strengthen accessibility and customer experience?

Our goal is simple: make Mouka products accessible wherever and however consumers choose to shop. To achieve this, we are modernising our route-to-market in several ways.

First, we’re strengthening last-mile distribution through a structured depot network and improved logistics efficiency, ensuring consistent product availability across all regions.

Second, we have been enhancing the in-store experience through branded retail environments from showrooms to shop-in-shop executions, so consumers can physically experience our products before making purchase decisions.

Third, we are expanding our omnichannel footprint, deepening our presence in modern retail, e-commerce platforms, and social commerce to cater to digitally active shoppers.

Ultimately, the aim is a seamless, integrated commercial ecosystem that delivers speed, convenience, and superior brand experience at every touchpoint.

Your professional journey has led you to become Commercial Director at one of Nigeria’s most iconic brands. What pivotal career decisions or lessons have shaped your leadership philosophy?

A pivotal career decision for me was embracing roles that stretched my capabilities, combining commercial strategy with hands-on execution. I quickly learned that growth happens outside of comfort zones.

Another defining lesson has been the understanding that clarity and consistency win, clarity in strategy and consistency in performance. Whether I was leading sales teams, managing categories, or driving brand portfolios, maintaining clarity of direction and discipline in execution has shaped my leadership DNA.

Most importantly, I have learned that leadership is not about having all the answers; it is about empowering and enabling others, fostering alignment, and creating an environment where people feel confident delivering their best.

Leading commercial operations requires balancing strategy with execution. How do you build high-performing teams, and what values guide your approach to people management and sales culture?

Winning in the market starts with winning internally. I am passionate about building high-performance, high-accountability teams with a strong sense of ownership.

My approach is grounded in three values:
Clarity: ensuring everyone understands the goals, the “why,” and the expected standards.
Discipline: driving a culture of consistency, measurement, and follow-through.
Empathy: recognising that people perform best when they feel supported and valued.

I also believe in enabling people with the right tools, training, data, coaching, and technology to create a performance-driven sales culture. When teams feel empowered and have line of sight to results, execution naturally becomes stronger and more competitive.

Looking ahead, what personal career milestones are you still aspiring to, and how do you envision your role contributing to Mouka’s long-term market leadership and brand evolution?

Personally, I remain committed to continuous growth and to taking on broader, more strategic responsibilities in shaping business outcomes, both within Mouka and within the larger manufacturing and consumer goods ecosystem in Nigeria.

For Mouka, my focus is to help steer the organisation toward future-ready market leadership, expanding our innovation pipeline, deepening consumer relevance, modernising our sales and distribution architecture, and ensuring the brand remains synonymous with trust, comfort, and exceptional performance.

Ultimately, my aspiration is to contribute to building a Mouka that is stronger, more agile, and globally competitive one that will continue to define sleep quality in Nigeria for decades to come.
