Zenith Bank has appointed Dame (Dr.) Adaora Umeoji, OON, as its Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, effective June 1, 2024. Dr. Umeoji’s appointment marks a significant milestone as she becomes the first female GMD/CEO in the bank’s history. This decision aligns with Zenith Bank’s tradition of executive transition, succession planning, and internal leadership development.
Dr. Umeoji brings with her nearly thirty years of banking experience, with twenty-six of those years spent at Zenith Bank. She has served as the Deputy Managing Director since October 28, 2016, demonstrating her leadership capabilities and deep understanding of the organization.
Her academic achievements include attending prestigious institutions such as Harvard Business School, Columbia Business School, and the University of Salford, among others. Dr. Umeoji holds degrees in Sociology, Accounting, Law, and Business Administration, as well as certifications from renowned institutions like MIT Sloan School of Management and Wharton Business School.
She is a fellow of various professional bodies, showcasing her commitment to continuous learning and professional excellence. In recognition of her contributions to nation-building and humanitarian efforts, Dr. Umeoji was honored by the Federal Government of Nigeria and received several awards, including the Officer of the Order of the Niger and the Humanitarian Service Icon Award.
Dr. Umeoji’s dedication to promoting ethical banking and supporting the less privileged is evident through her involvement in NGOs such as the Pink Breathe Cancer Foundation and the Adorable Foundation. Additionally, she founded the Catholic Bankers Association of Nigeria to uphold professionalism and serve humanity.
