Wema Bank has marked the 10th anniversary of Wemalympics, its flagship internal sports tournament, reaffirming its commitment to fostering camaraderie, employee well-being, and work-life balance. Widely regarded as the biggest internal sports event in Nigeria’s banking industry, Wemalympics has become a key part of the bank’s corporate culture since its launch in 2015.
Themed “We Strive, We Bond, We Win,” this year’s milestone edition brought together over 7,000 participants, including Wema Bank employees, fondly referred to as Knights, their families, partners, and sponsors. The multi-sport event featured a mix of indoor and outdoor games designed to test athleticism, promote health and fitness, and strengthen the bonds within the Wema community.
Team South West emerged as the overall winner, dominating the medal tables across multiple categories. Team Lagos secured second place with an impressive performance, particularly in the football finals, while Team South South/South East and Team North finished third and fourth, respectively.
In his remarks, Moruf Oseni, Managing Director/CEO of Wema Bank, expressed appreciation to staff, families, partners, and sponsors for their continued support, describing the event as a testament to the bank’s commitment to its people.
“This is our 10th year doing Wemalympics and today, I’d like to say a big thank you to you all, staff of Wema Bank who continue to make out time and actively participate year after year; families of Knights who have been on this journey with us; our sponsors and partners who continue to support meaningfully; and everyone else who has been a part of this journey in any capacity,” Oseni said.
“The energy I have seen here today gives me the confidence that there is nothing we cannot achieve as a bank if we set our minds to it. As we compete with passion, I urge us all to remember that we are one, and we are all winners.”
Receiving the grand prize trophy on behalf of the winning region, Sunday Olaitan, Regional Executive for the South West, described the team’s performance as a product of consistency and teamwork.
“South West has been a formidable force throughout the decade-long history of Wemalympics, and it goes without saying. This is our 4th consecutive victory at Wemalympics and our 6th time in total receiving the trophy for Overall Best,” Olaitan stated.
The closing ceremony featured a range of activities including a ceremonial lap round the track, vibrant cheerleading performances, and the unveiling of the Wemalympics Anthem, a symbolic moment that underscored the event’s growing legacy within the bank.
In celebration of outstanding athletic performances, two round-trip tickets were awarded to the winners of the male and female 100m races courtesy of Wakanow, while GAC Motors presented a brand-new EV, the WULING Bingo, to the overall winning region, Team South West.
