Airtel Africa has revealed that its Chief Executive Officer, Olusegun Ogunsanya, will retire effective July 1, 2024, marking the end of an era marked by transformative leadership. The telecommunications giant has also appointed Sunil Taldar as the incoming Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, who will commence a structured transition under the guidance of Ogunsanya.
Sunil Taldar, who joined Airtel Africa in October 2023 as the Director of Transformation, will navigate the path to the CEO role during the transition period, ensuring a seamless handover. Taldar is set to be appointed to the Board as an Executive Director and officially take on the role of CEO starting July 1, 2024.
Segun Ogunsanya Tenure at Airtel Africa
His tenure at Airtel Africa commenced in 2012 when he took the reins of the Nigeria operations. Over the course of nine years, his leadership not only propelled the Nigerian sector forward but also resulted in his appointment as the CEO of the entire group in 2021. Under his leadership, Airtel Africa consistently achieved double-digit revenue growth, and the company credits him with introducing innovative products to customers across the continent.
During Ogunsanya’s tenure, Airtel Africa embarked on various strategic initiatives, including the launch of its first sustainability strategy. With deep-rooted knowledge of the African landscape, Ogunsanya is poised to become the inaugural Chairman of the Airtel Africa Charitable Foundation following his retirement. The charitable foundation is set to play a pivotal role in advancing Airtel Africa’s sustainability and philanthropic endeavors, focusing on digital inclusion, financial inclusion, access to education, and environmental protection. The foundation will operate independently as a separate legal entity.
In recognition of Ogunsanya’s exceptional contributions to Airtel Africa, he will be available for advisory roles for a 12-month period following his retirement. Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman of Airtel Africa, expressed gratitude for Ogunsanya’s dedication and significant contributions, acknowledging his impact on Airtel Africa’s growth and development.
