Tony Elumelu Shifts Focus to Oil and Gas as UBA Names Emmanuel Nnorom New Chairman

Billionaire investor and business leader Tony O. Elumelu will step down as Chairman of the Group Board of United Bank for Africa (UBA) on August 21, 2026, marking the end of a transformative 12-year tenure and signalling a strategic shift towards the energy sector.

Having reached the regulatory tenure limit for non-executive directors, Elumelu will hand over the leadership of UBA to Emmanuel Nnorom, who assumes office on the same day. Elumelu is expected to deepen his involvement in the oil and gas industry by becoming Chairman of Seplat Energy in January 2027, following Heirs Energies' landmark acquisition, further expanding his leadership across Africa's strategic energy landscape.

The transition marks the close of one of the most consequential leadership eras in UBA's history. During his chairmanship, Elumelu oversaw the bank's transformation into a leading pan-African financial institution with operations in 20 African countries and a presence across four continents. Today, UBA serves more than 50 million customers, connecting businesses, governments and individuals while facilitating trade, investment and financial inclusion across Africa and the global economy.you have so generously given me over the years.

In a farewell message titled "Celebrating an African Institution: My Farewell from UBA," Elumelu described institution-building as the ultimate purpose of leadership, emphasizing that enduring organisations must be designed to outlive the individuals who lead them.

"Leadership is not about holding onto a position, but knowing when an institution is ready for the next chapter," he said.

Reflecting on his decades-long association with UBA, Elumelu said his vision was to create a world-class African financial institution capable of driving economic transformation across the continent.

"I have never been able to look at Africa and see only borders. Where many see fifty-four separate markets, I saw one continent, one destiny, waiting to be transformed, waiting to be believed in," he said.

According to him, Africa's greatest challenge is not a shortage of talented people but a shortage of institutions that endure beyond generations of exceptional leaders.

Under his leadership, UBA expanded aggressively across Africa and into global financial centres, strengthening its position as Africa's Global Bank. The institution has grown into one of the continent's largest banking groups, supporting entrepreneurship, financing trade and investment, empowering businesses and delivering long-term value to shareholders.

Elumelu credited the bank's achievements to the collective efforts of its board, management, employees, regulators, customers, shareholders and business partners, describing the institution's success as a shared accomplishment.

Welcoming Nnorom as his successor, Elumelu expressed confidence in the incoming chairman's ability to sustain the bank's growth trajectory.

"I have every confidence in his ability to lead the Bank. His experience, leadership and deep understanding of our institution will provide the continuity and strategic direction needed to build on the strong foundation we have established," he said.

UBA, in a tribute to its outgoing chairman, described Elumelu's tenure as one defined by visionary leadership, strategic expansion and an unwavering belief in Africa's potential. The bank said his stewardship transformed UBA into one of Africa's most respected financial institutions, demonstrating that an African-owned institution can compete successfully on the global stage while remaining committed to the continent's development.

Although stepping down from UBA, Elumelu's influence across corporate Africa is set to expand. Beginning in January 2027, he is expected to assume the chairmanship of Seplat Energy, following Heirs Energies' major acquisition, further strengthening his presence in Africa's energy sector.

Beyond banking, Elumelu's business interests span finance, energy, hospitality, healthcare, technology and power through the Heirs Holdings portfolio. He also continues to champion entrepreneurship across the continent through the Tony Elumelu Foundation, which has supported thousands of African entrepreneurs with funding, mentorship and business training.

As UBA embarks on a new chapter under Nnorom's leadership, the institution says it remains firmly committed to its founding ambition of building Africa's leading financial institution, expanding trade and investment, empowering businesses and communities, and creating sustainable value across the continent and beyond.

For Elumelu, the transition represents not an end, but the fulfilment of a philosophy he has long championed, that the greatest legacy of leadership is building institutions strong enough to thrive long after their founders have moved on.
